National Parks in Argentina

There are over 25 National Parks in Argentina, each one more beautiful and more spectacular than the next. Most of the national parks in Argentina are dedicated to protecting the environment. From glaciers to deserts, rainforests to savannas, just about every ecosystem in Argentina has a national park devoted to its protection.

National Parks in the Northeast


  • The Iguazú National Park has an area of 550 sq. km and is located in the northern province of Misiones. This park has one of the most incredible sights in Argentina, the Iguazú Falls.

  • The Chaco National Park in the Chaco Province was created to protect the warm lowlands and the endangered quebracho trees. Within the confines of this park are cougars, tapirs, alligators and more than 300 species of birds.

  • Mburucuyá National Park is one of the many national parks of Argentina formed to protect the wildlife and natural environment of the northwest Corrientes Province. The endangered maned wolf, marsh deer and river otter call this park home.

National Parks in the Northwest


  • In the north province of Salta is the Baritú National Park. Of all the national parks in Argentina, this is the only one that contains tropical landscape.

  • The El Rey National Park is also one of the many national parks in Argentina that focuses on the protection of its ecosystem. There are several archaeological sites of interest located in the park.

  • Los Cardones National Park situated in centre of the Salta province has over 650 sq. km. of impressive landscapes and scenery. Many fossils and dinosaur tracks are located in this park.

National Parks in Central Argentina


  • Located in southwest province of San Juan, El Leoncito National Park has over 760 sq. km. and was created to protect the Puna and High Andean scrublands. There are also several archaeological sites to be found in the park including Inca’s Way. There are two astronomical observatories that can be visited.

  • El Palmar National Park is located in the Entre Rios province. Its 85 sq. km were developed to protect the Yatay palm trees that were in danger of extinction.

  • One of the larger national parks of Argentina is the Talampaya National Park with over 2,000 sq. km. of protected land. There are numerous historical and paleontological areas in the park as well as a desert like climate. This park was designated a World Heritage Site.

National Parks in the South


  • Laguna Blanca Park was created around a lagoon that is the home to the endangered black-necked swan. Nearby is the Salamanca cave with incredible petroglyphs painted by ancient human inhabitants.

  • Another of the larger parks located along the Chilean border is Los Alerces National Park. It is famous for its alerce or lahuan trees. These trees are one of the longest lived in the world with some over 3,000 years old.

  • One of the smaller national parks with only 17 sq km is Los Arrayanes National Park. There is a wonderful walking path through the Arrayan trees that starts at the port of Villa La Angostura. It is popular with mountain bikers too.

  • Perhaps one of the most famous national parks in Argentina is Parque Nacional Los Glaciares or Glacier National Park. With over 4,400 sq. km it is the second largest park in the country and was declared a World Heritage Site. There are 47 glaciers in park fed by a huge ice cap located in the mountains. Over 30% of this park is covered by ice.

  • Nahuel Huapi National Park is the oldest park in Argentina at the base of the Andes Mountains. It was created in 1903 and houses the city of Carlos de Bariloche and a rather exclusive lakeside hotel and resort. This park is known for its wildlife including river otters, guanacos and maras.

  • Tierra del Fuego National Park stretches from the Beagle Channel along the border of Chile. This park has beautiful scenery with glaciers, waterfalls, and imposing mountains. There are over 20 mammalian species that call this park home.
